Skirmish advise please

Hi
Could use some tips and tricks for skirmishing. I'm level 37 and just tried skirmishing for first time on LM, which resulted in my first ever defeat!
I went with protector, which died in seconds, and I just got overwhelmed.
Can anyone advise the best strategy for LM please? Seems a lot harder than my Champ that just mows everything down with a herbalist to heal.
